Artist uses her talents for good

My friend, the Tipsy Artist, just bowls me over with the enthusiasm of her emails and personality. Tipsy, known in the real world as Tiffany Bohrer, is a true renaissance woman. Don’t think there is anything she cannot do.
You’ll find table tent cards in restaurants inviting you to wine and painting, and you’ll want to attend, as she teaches and entertains. Best of all, you’ll go home with a painting you did all by yourself, but created with professional techniques that Tiffany has shown you.

At a recent fundraiser named “Jubilee Tree Painting Night at Othello’s,” Barry Switzer showed up and painted. Tiffany said his painting was true to form, involving football plays and OU scores. The bidding ever escalates on that piece of art, and James Ray will benefit with Fundraiser.

Norman local James Ray lost his home and all belongings in that devastating wildfire last month. James is handicapped and paralyzed from his chest down due to a serious motorcycle accident in 2011.

Tiffany was born in California, grew up in west Texas, went to Texas Tech at Lubbock, and then the family moved to Dallas. Her mom, a nurse, remarried to a gentleman who was also, like James, quadriplegic, and from Oklahoma (that’s how we’re getting to the Oklahoma part). Tiffany married a fellow who is known as “Utopia Joe.” Joe, a furniture artist had a show on OETA, so you probably know the name.

A whirlwind of talent, Tiffany has had businesses wherever she lived, most of them very creative. She held scrapbooking seminars, taught shadowbox creation, headed logistics for Oklahoma Creativity Project, and was director of marketing and public relations for Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri. Joe, equally creative, worked in San Francisco for Laurel Burch, known as the “cat lady,” who was licensed to have her work on everything from mouse pads to coffee cups. After Ms. Burch’s passing, Joe recreated her work to continue the legacy.

Back in Oklahoma City, Tiffany and Joe did a renovation project with Bob Howard on a little cottage downtown – only it looked like a crack house when they started. Now it is all sassy in turquoise with white trim and a red door, and bringing the surrounding area up with it. Tiffany then had a paint studio there, and started teaching with painting parties. www.midtownr.com

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ... Gary Good (yes, our Gary Good) found Tiffany’s work on Facebook, and needing a go-getter to promote his Guthrie Gallery “Gallery Grazioso,” www.thegallerygrazioso.com  and his enthralling and beautiful bed and breakfast “Magnolia Manor” www.theguthrieretreat.com (Oklahoma’s first poured concrete building), and his adjacent guest house, “Suite Betty Jean,” he hired Tiffany. She, again, can do anything. She’s the director of his gallery, re-done his websites, and creates videos, oh yeah, and is the mother of two!

Now, about the “Tipsy Artist” part of Tiffany: basically, it is friends getting together, learning how to paint, drinking wine and creating something special with paints and a canvas. There’s a lot of teaching, but a LOT of conversation. A class lasts about three hours, and she has live music at every party, often Bill Merickel who plays the Native American flute. Tiffany supplies all the materials (easel, canvases, brushes and paints), and you bring your hidden or obvious talents.

Some of her brainchild ideas for classes are “Mystic Pizza Painting,” “Bride Paint Wars,” “Breakfast & Painting at Tiffany’s” (yes, the distinctive aqua box invitation) or you can think of some fun name and activity that Tiffany can produce. Tiffany maintains about painting skills, “There are no mistakes, only possibilities.”

I ran into a gentleman a couple of months ago who said, “Oh, this is the night my wife paints with the Tipsy Artist, she just wouldn’t miss!” Her paint parties are at Belinis once a month and Othello’s in Norman twice a month. And often groups of friends get together to have a fun evening.
